House Speaker Paul Ryan on Monday officially invited President Barack Obama to deliver his State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday, Jan. 12.

"As we look ahead to the new year, we have an opportunity and an obligation to find common ground to advance the nation's interests at home and abroad," Ryan said in a letter to Obama. "We also owe it to the American people to present solutions that address the challenges they face."

A White House official said that Obama is accepting the invitation.
